While the vast majority of fans and media outlets are focusing on LeBron James’ pending return to Cleveland, Zydrunas Ilgauskas will be wearing another jersey in Quicken Loans Arena for the first time in his 14-year career.
And while most fans have a bit of closure with regard to Ilgauskas leaving Cleveland via free agency, the veteran big man is still unsure what is in store.
“To be honest with you, I don’t know what to expect,” Ilgauskas told the Associated Press. “It’s my first time as a visitor. I’m not going to separate myself from the team. I’m part of the Heat now, so these are my guys and obviously we are going to get a harsh, harsh reception as a team.”
Ilgauskas and James had become close friends over the course of the two-time MVP’s seven years with the team. After he was traded last February, Ilgauskas’ contract no longer came with the “Bird Rights” that would allow the Cavaliers to pay him more than any other team. Knowing well that the Miami Heat’s situation would provide a better chance for the noble veteran to win a championship, the two sides parted ways, albeit a bit more amicably.
The Heat will not be staying in Cleveland overnight due to their game in Detroit on Wednesday, instead opting to arrive very early on Thursday. Following the game, the team will be shuttled to the airport where they will head back to Miami, not allowing for a lot of hugs, kisses and rekindling of old friendships.
“This is going to be a unique situation,” said Ilgauskas. “The biggest part that people forget, there’s still a game for both teams to play that both teams want to win. We’re going to have to do the best we can to focus, to block out the outside attention.”
Ilgauskas voiced some concern over his friend and teammate James, stating that he hopes “nothing stupid happens.”
Ilgauskas is Cleveland’s all-time leader in games played, rebounds, and blocked shots. His trade from Cleveland to Washington (for Antawn Jamison) brought tears to many, including then general manger Danny Ferry. He continues to be one of the more beloved former Cavaliers and will likely be met with a warm reception upon his first check-in.
“I hope people appreciate what I did there for 14 years,” Ilgauskas said, “because I appreciate what they did for me and my family.”
